Clinical Studies on Gnillain-Barre Syndrome (1969~1974)




Abstract
The clinical studies were performed on 58 patients who had been admitted to Severance hospital from Jaunary, 1969 to December, 1974 with the diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
The following results were obtained:
1. Forty two cases were male and 16 cases female. The age ranged from 6 months to 43 years old with the peak incidence of 3 to 6 years. The incidence was highest during summer.
2. Twenty six cases had preceding diseases, 19 being upper respiratory infections.
3. Physical findings at the time of admission were paralysis of lower extremities in 56 cases, upper extremities in 37 cases, cranial nerves in 19 cases, and during admission, respiratory muscle paralysis developed in 8 cases.
4. No albuminocytologic dissociation were observed in 12 out of 58 cases at the time of admission, but were noted in 10 of them 1 week later, and the rest were clinically significant.
5. Respiratory muscle paralysis developed in 8 cases out of 53 cases, 6 cases recovered after tracheostomy and respirator monitering.
6. Overall recovery rate were 84%, most recovering within 5 months after the onset, only 3 cases died, 2 cases of them after tracheostomy and respirator monitering because of cardiac
arrest, the mortality rate being 5.1%.
